President Carla called the 10th meeting of the Rotary year to order at 12:02. The Pledge was led by Laura. President Carla kicked off the Happy Bucks by sharing that she had a wonderful backpack trip into the Grand Canyon for 6 days, which was worth $20 in Happy Bucks. Karl Eberhart kicked in $20 in celebration of the birth of Chad and Megan's new son. Dino ponyed up $10 because the election is over!
Tonya presented Karl with his PH+2 award, and thanked him for his long service to our club. Karl is leaving us (and Flagstaff) for his new digs in Friday Harbor, WA. Expect visitors, Karl!! Tonya presented Karl with a parting gift of a Rotary branded traveling world alarm clock with an LED torch.
Mike announced that we will be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, Saturday, December 12th at Sam's Club between 10am and 6 pm. Watch for the signup sheet, which will be sent via Clubrunner soon. We are also adopting two families again this year, and details about their needs will be forthcoming as well. The first family is a couple with 3 grandchildren; a boy 11 and two girls 10 and 15. The second is a couple with a boy 4 and a girl 7. Purchases must be delivered unwrapped to the Salvation Army by December 21st.
Paul then initiated a five minute "breakout" session, where Rotarians were randomly split into virtual "rooms" with three or four others to share what Thanksgiving would mean for them this year. It was a fun way to have conversations within the Zoom format, and we will definitely do more of this in the future.
December 1st is Charter Night! The Flagstaff Rotary Club will be 99 years old that day, so we're going to celebrate. The meeting will have a evening format - still on Zoom- and will take the place of the noon meeting. Event details will be sent out soon, and spouses are invited! Guest speaker will be DG Elizabeth Mahoney
Chad introduced his lovely wife, Megan, as our speaker, and she introduced C.T. Morgan and Darrin. They are members of the Toasted Flag Toastmaster's club, of which Darrin is the current president. Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. They are interested in finding ways that they can collaborate with Rotary to help with service projects in the area.
They described a typical meeting, then CT lead us in a quick example, calling on Jeremy and Steve to give improptu "table talks". Jeremy spoke about how he feels when he gives his Sunday sermon, and Steve Peru spoke about why he would take a leadership job for twice the salary. They both did a great job, and Jeremy was voted the winner both for his speech and for is awesome Star Fighter Zoom background!
Carla presented to Megan the book we will be donating in the name of Toastmasters to the Flagstaff Food Center reading room- "Why does the Sun Shine"? Steve Colf led us in the 4 Way Test, and President Carla adjourned the meeting at 1 p.m.
