This week's program
.
President Jeff called the 6th meeting of the Rotary year to order at 12:05.  The Pledge was led by Kim and Hoppy led us in a quick verse of “Get Together Song”.   Mike Williams, formerly of the Wenatchee Confluence Rotary Club, and now retired and residing in Flagstaff when he isn’t travelling, and Chad Taylor, who works in Kingman but chooses to live in Flagstaff, visited us today.  We hope Mike and Chad decide to join us permanently!

Eric’s Rotary moment focused on Peace and Conflict Prevention, one of RI’s 6 areas of focus.  Last year, 68 million people, half of whom were children were displaced by conflict.  Addressing any of the other 5 areas can reduce conflict and lead to peace.

Eric and Kim updated us on the newly founded Interact Club at Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy.  The first meeting, attended by 2 students, was last week.  They left the meeting excited to recruit more members before next week's meeting.

Catherine and Carrie from Northland Hospice visited to thank us for our Club’s earlier donation, and to promote their upcoming fundraiser on October 6.  Lee generously donated a pair of tickets to the event, which were quickly bid up in price and went to PDG Tonya for a $150 donation to the Club!

Under the weather Sgt at Arms Rick will feel much better when he hears Happy Bucks generated $55 in his absence!  Paul was $20 happy to survive 7 hours of grueling racquetball and to come in 2nd in both events, Trish donated $20 for the Washington State Cougars last 2 football victories, Millie still had $10 left to donate from her trip to Ireland, Scotland, Windsor and Normandy, and Tonya donated $5 for the experience of being the personal aide to Jennifer Jones at Zone Institute for a week in September.

Frank introduced member Chris Verrill, Executive Director of Theatrikos Theatre, and member of Flagstaff Rotary since February 1.  Chris relocated to Flagstaff from Beijing where he resided and was a member of the Beijing Rotary Club from 2006 – 2018.  The Beijing Rotary Club was founded in 1923, but in 1949, Rotary, and all other service clubs ceased to exist, when they were banned by the Chinese government.   It was re-established as a friendship group in the early 1990’s and re-chartered, along with the Shanghai club in 2006.  They were the only clubs not part of a District, but reported directly to the RI President, who visited each year.  Members are all expatriates, as the Chinese government prohibits Chinese citizens from joining. They meet every Tuesday for lunch, at the Kempinski Hotel, where they dine on German food!  Meetings are conducted in English with members from 15 different countries.  They identify medical needs that are sensitive for the Chinese government,  such as AIDS and advocate for education and outreach.

President Jeff announced that we are actively looking for a President Elect.  If you are interested, or would like to nominate someone for this position, please let him know.  September 28 is our Volunteer Day at the Flagstaff Family Food Center.  Watch your email for reminders.  Our next meeting is October 1, with Mary Kershaw, Executive Director of the Museum of Northern Arizona as our speaker.

Karl led us in the 4 Way Test and the meeting was adjourned at 1:00.
