Flagstaff Schools and Coconino Community College Ballot Propositions

President Jeff called the fifth meeting of our Rotary year to order at 12:05 pm.  The pledge of allegiance was led by Karl Eberhard, and to celebrate the kickoff of the college football season Hoppy Hopkins led us in Sing Rotarians to the tune of On Wisconsin.

ROTARY MINUTE:  Eric Walden spent a few minutes explaining that Paul Harris founded Rotary so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.  Rotary's name came from the early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of members.

PROGRAM:  Mike Penca, Superintendent of the Flagstaff Unified School District, is in his second year as Superintendent.  FUSD is the second largest district area wise in the State, with over 9,700 students at 15 different schools, and the 5th largest employer in Flagstaff.  He explained how the $75 million Bond Proposition 423 funds would be used and the financial impact on property owners.  He also covered the use of funds under the Proposition 424 Override.  Additional information available at www.fusd1.org/bondandoverride.

Dr. Colleen Smith, President of Coconino Community College, shared with us how CCC prepares students to be job ready, assists in the transition of veterans to civilian jobs, develops programs throughout the largest county in AZ, and trains/retrains workers to fit employer needs.  She explained what would be gained under Proposition 417 and its financial impact on property owners.  Additional info www.coconino.edu.

Kim Batty-Herbert led us in the 4 Way Test, and President Jeff adjourned the meeting at 1:00 pm.

Our next meeting is September 18, when our speaker will be Doug Nick from the Arizona Department of Transportation updating us on their customer service enhancements and the new federal ID program.
