This week's program
President Jeff called the last meeting of this Rotary year to order at 12:04 pm.  The meeting was held via Zoom.
President Jeff introduced a guest, Laura, who was a member of the Edina, MN Rotary club for 20 years, who has now relocated to Flagstaff.  Jeff then asked each member present to give a brief update.  Frank reported that he has listed his home for sale and he and his wife will be relocating to Anthem Country Club.  PDG Tonya mentioned that Anthem has a very active Rotary club.  Carla advised that she was leaving for a camping trip to Great Basin National Park.  Millie reported she was catching up on doctors appointments and various other things.  Chad said that Meghan is now 21 weeks along with their baby boy!  Vaughan shared that he had recently started a new job in the Coconino County Public Defenders office. He mentioned that he couldn’t speak for other clients of the office, but he was certain all of his defendants were innocent (which of course they are until a jury decides otherwise). Lee Riddell said she had been exploring the sights of Flagstaff, having recently hiked at Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater.  Dino mentioned the hotel business was picking up with last minute bookings although he expects the 4th of July weekend to be disappointing.  (Hang in there Dino, it will get better!).  PDG Tonya said she and Steve have been busy remodeling some rentals.  Jeff said the real estate market is booming both in Flagstaff and around the country owing to changing needs for vacations as well as historically low interest rates.
President Jeff then turned the meeting over to President-elect Carla.  Carla mentioned this was the last meeting of the 2019/2020 Rotary year, and the last meeting of President Jeff’s two-year tenure.  Carla thanked Jeff for his leadership.  During President Jeff’s tenure membership increased from 22 to 32, we got reengaged in serving our community and became much more active socially.  Attendance at regular meetings more than doubled.  Carla then introduced a video montage of members (assembled by Past President Paul Wagner) offering their personal thanks for Jeff’s leadership, ending with a stirring rendition of “I’m Your Captain” presented by PDG Tonya and Steve.  The video may be viewed on You Tube shortly.  President-elect Carla then presented Jeff with two Kickstand Coffee Tea decanters to be enjoyed by Sue and Jeff in their Rotary “retirement”.
President Jeff recapped the club’s accomplishments over the past two years and thanked the club and his board for their support and contributions.  He then turned the meeting over to Dr. Chad who introduced our speaker, Col. Larry Lang (USAF Ret.), Executive Director of the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra.
Col. Lang served his country for over 24 years as a conductor of the United States Air Force band. Upon his retirement he and his wife moved to Flagstaff to be closer to his children.  During his career with the Air Force, Col. Lang led the Air Force Band in performances at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade; in support of troops during a 2009 deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan helping to improve morale and troop spirit; concerts for World War II veterans participating in honor flights; several functions at the White House, etc.  After sequestration and related dramatic cuts in military budgets in 2013, Col. Lang created flash mob performances of the USAF band in locations which did not require travel, performing at the Air and Space Museum and around the nation’s capital.
The Flagstaff Symphony was founded in 1950.  It has served the Flagstaff community continuously for 70 years, including outreach to over 27 schools and 3,700 students a year.  The upcoming season has been delayed and the annual Independence Day concert has been cancelled for 2020, but he is hopeful they will be able to re-start the concert season in September with a celebration of the 250th birthday of Beethoven, an October concert with Ballet Folklorico, and the Nutcracker in December.  In 2021, a January concert will feature musical children’s stories, February will see a first ever Saturday matinee of Broadway classics which will feature two Broadway stars. In April, the symphony will present a concert and panel discussion about “Mother Earth”.   A short video about the Symphony was then presented.
Col. Lang concluded his remarks by explaining the Symphony is supported in equal parts of ticket sales, sponsorships/grants, and donations.  With the lack of tickets sales now, donations have become even more important to the future of the Symphony, which lead them to create a “FSO Strong” campaign where individual musicians have provided recorded solo performances available on the FSO website which can be accessed here.  Please consider supporting the FSO if you are able. A brief question and answer session followed.
President Jeff announced that our next meeting would be July 7, 2020, and our scheduled speaker was Sandra Perez, speaking about cancer support.  President Jeff then led us in the Four Way Test of the things we Think, Say and Do. The meeting was adjourned at 12:57 pm, so ending another Rotary year and the term of President Jeff.  Please join us next month for the first meeting of the term of 2020/2021 President Carla Viola.
