Our Centennial Year!

Welcome to another issue of our newsletter! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we covered in this week's meeting and any other scheduled events.

We met in person and on zoom.  We had 14 members in house plus 1 on Zoom.  District Governor Bret McKeand was in the house as was Billie McGraw, a local realtor and guest of Steve Colf,  and visiting Rotarian Bill McCreery (Green Valley) who has retired to Kachina Village.

Club President Tonya Watson called the 22th and LAST meeting of the 2021-2022 Rotary year at 12:05pm.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Maria.  Tonya led the club in a moment of silent reflection for hope for sustained peace throughout the world.

The Rotary Moment was led by Eric Walden discussing RI's June theme of Rotary Fellowship Groups Month.  Eric quizzed the members as to what kind of Fellowship groups would interest them.   We heard from RVing beer drinking, quilting, camping and then a suggestion to start one for funeral directors!  Just about all of those are up and running.
You can find information on the multitude of fellowships at https://www.rotary.org/en/our-programs/more-fellowships

Year in review

Tonya presented the accomplishments of the club during this Rotary year.   There was a lot going on and accomplished!
- Our Centennial Year Celebrated in two ways... the big Charter Night party in December and then the Centennial Mural painting project in April / May.
- FALA Chartered their INTERACT club
- Inaugural golf tournament fundraiser
- Increase in members by 25%
- Increase in female members from 18% to 26%
- The addition of monthly service projects
- The new meeting venue at Taverna
- The addition of monthly social events
- The addition of a Public Image board member.  This resulted in not 1, not 2, but 3 above the fold articles and pictures of Rotary / Interact related activities in the AZ Daily Sun.
-Clear progress was made for the club towards being a 100% Paul Harris Fellow club
- $10,521 was give by members to The Rotary Foundation
- The club gave $321 per capita to the Foundation.

It has been a great growth year for the club.  The February Club visioning project will help keep the club moving forward.

Paul Harris Fellowship presentations

District Governor Blake and Steve Cervantes presented 22 Paul Harris Fellows. An honorary PHF was given to Lindsey DeStefano, the artist for our Centennial Mural Project.

There were 5 groups of members that were presented their pins.
First time Paul Harris Fellows, PHF+1, PHF+2, PHF+3, and Carla Viola received a PHF+6.  Congratulations to everyone earning their pin and to Steve for his tireless work this year!.  This is how the club donated $10K to the Foundation during 2021-2022.

District award

District Governor Bret presented Steve Cervantes with an award for the outstanding work he did this at the district level.

Announcements and Other News

Vocational Service

Steve Colf gave the two minute vocation service chat today.  It was an action packed 2 minutes.  He started out in the Navy after HS.  He found later that his passion is really sales and not sailing.  His vocation was to run a successful manufacturing agency.  It was there that he realized he should follow his grandfather's advice "Hire good people and make yourself obsolete".  And so he did and freed himself up for travel and service.  Riding a mule on the route San Martin made from Argentina to Chile got him on the discovery channel as a part of the Extreme Trekking. He and his wife Mary Ann split their time between CA and their retirement home here in Flagstaff.

golf fundraiser

Laura noted that we have sold 11 of 27 foursomes with another.  Financial services members - contact your friends and associates that golf and get them signed up!

The key to success in this fundraiser is the selling of sponsorships.   Last year we sold day-of Golf Hole Sponsorships only.  We are doing that again this year.  For $150 the sponsor will get advertising on the course during the event.

This year, we are selling higher level sponsorships.  Businesses or organizations will get visibility in local media both before and after the fundraiser.  Additionally, the higher level sponsors will have their logo on our 2022 golf website information.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to support the Northland Hospice, Community College scholarships for the Foundation, and other local activities.

Our weekly ‘50-50 split the pot’ card game ended!  Guest Billie McGraw pulled the joker out of the deck much to the surprise of Hoppy!  The pot was $675 to the club and $675 to Billie.  Who immediately donated her funds towards a Paul Harris Fellowship.
