Welcome to another issue of our weekly bulletin! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we covered in today's meeting and any other scheduled events.
20 Members, 2 guests and 2 visiting Rotarians joined us today.
This week's program
President Jeff called the 7th meeting of the Rotary year to order at 12:01.  The Pledge was led by Millie,  and Hoppy led us in a verse of “Wait Till the Sun Shines Nellie”.  During our Moment of Silence, President Jeff asked us to keep Jim Dorman in our thoughts and prayers as he is recovering from a recent heart attack.

Eric Walden introduced his guest, Molly Brown, Executive Director, Northern Arizona Volunteer Medical Corp, and Chris introduced his guest Jonathan Stone, Executive Director, Flagstaff Arts Council.  Rotarians Steve and MaryAnn Colf are back in Flagstaff and back to visit our Club.

Carla thanked all who attended Saturday’s service project at Flagstaff Family Food Center and reminded us of the Saturday, October 19 project to build a privacy fence around 2 new Habitat for Humanity houses.

PDG Tonya began the induction ceremony of new members, Chad Taylor, Paul Wagner, and Mike Williams, by having them and their respective sponsors, Mike Hosking(standing in for Laurie Taylor who was attending via Skype), Lee and Vaughan.  They were each presented with their badge, certificate of membership and 4 Way Test Plaque before President Jeff had attending Rotarians stand and pledge their support to our new members.

Chad is originally from Minnesota, and moved to Flagstaff after attending medical school in Mesa.  Both his father and stepmother are active Rotarians, and he looks forward to volunteering through Rotary.

Former member, and 2 time Past President Paul moved to Flagstaff to attend NAU and never left.  Both his father and grandfather were Rotarians and past presidents of their clubs.  Paul and his wife Sue are the proud parents of Will, 16 and Kate, 14, who you have probably seen working at past service projects.

Mike is a May 2019 retiree from the US Forest Service, and has been a Flagstaff resident since 2001, even while working in Williams and Wenatchee.  Mike has been a Rotarian since 1986 and we become his 4th Rotary Club!

President Jeff was presented a Paul Harris Fellow +2 pin by PDG Tonya and Trish.  Thank you Jeff for your generous contributions to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

Frank introduced Mary Kershaw, Executive Director, Museum of Northern Arizona.  Although having spoken to many clubs in England over the last 30 years, this is the first time she has been invited to speak to an American Rotary Club!  The Museum was founded in 1928 by Harold Colton and Mary Russell Ferrell Colton and was originally established to protect and preserve the natural and cultural heritage of northern Arizona.  The Museum encompasses 214 acres with 36 structures, some of which are historic, and some which can be rented for private events as well as VRBO.  Currently they host over 100 events per year.  They receive 46,000 visitors a year, and have 2,500 members.  They currently partner with NAU so all students have an annual membership.  Their long range goals include adding a café, and investing in high quality infrastructure to change the stories told in the gallery every 12 – 24 months.  The Force is with Our People is  their newest exhibit, and Searching for a Bigger Subject, featuring Tony Foster’s Grand Canyon paintings will open in November.

President Jeff announced we are still looking for nominations for President.  Please let him know if you are interested or would like to nominate someone.  The October Board meeting will be held Tuesday, October 8, at 8am at Coco’s.  All are welcome to attend, but if you have something you would like to discuss please let Jeff know so it can be on the agenda.  Our next meeting is October 15, when our speaker will be Tamara Lawless, City of Flagstaff Water Conservation and Sustainability.

Chris led us in the 4 Way Test, before a special closing bell, rung by newest members  Chad, Paul and Mike, using a gavel used by Paul’s grandfather 75 years ago when he was club President.

Rotary Day at Flagstaff Family Food Center
Rotary Day at Flagstaff Family Food Center
by Carla Viola

Holy cow!!  Our Saturday morning volunteer at the Family Food Center was wildly successful and a ton of fun.  We had 18 Rotarians, 7 family members and 8 Rotoractors.  Jim Dorman even made a cameo appearance to take pictures - thanks Jim!!  In 2 hours, we filled 1,185 paper bags with food to be distributed, before they finally asked us to please leave.  Thanks to everyone who showed up.
