Welcome to another issue of our weekly bulletin! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we covered in today's meeting and any other scheduled events.
20 Members, 2 Guests and 1 visiting Rotarian joined us today.
This week's program
President Jeff called the 14th meeting of the Rotary year to order at 12:00.  The Pledge was led by Frank and Hoppy led us in a verse of “Wait Till the Sun Shines Nellie”  to cheer the dreary day.

President Jeff announced that due to health and family issues, long time member Jim Dorman has resigned.  Vaughan reminded us the Coconino County Spelling Bee will be held on February 8. Meredith gave a brief update on the Mongolia project, and Jeremy shared thank you’s from the Salvation Army.

President Jeff started off Happy Bucks with $20 for his daughter and family who visited from Houston over the holidays.  His 7 year old grandson got to experience snow for the first time!  Kim was happy the students are back at CCC, visiting Rotarian Micah was happy about relocating to Flagstaff, Mike W was happy to celebrate 43 years with his lovely wife Barbara in Las Vegas, and Carla was sad that Mike and Trish announced they are leaving Flagstaff and returning to the Valley.

Chad introduced Joe Gutierrez, Principal of Killip Elementary School.  Joe has been principal there since 1994!    About 92% of the school is below the poverty level, with many of the students not having opportunities, including technology in their homes.  He believes the students need to learn basic skills, but more importantly, need to learn how to apply those skills in the real world.  They chose to adopt the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) approach about 7 years ago, and recently earned STEM Provider Certification.  Sheryl Wells, STEM Coordinator, shared some of the units each grade has worked on, including weather, plants, natural disasters, and space.  Students also participate in various after school enrichment programs which allow fun hands on participation centered around STEM.  These include Lego Robotics, Evergreen, Garden Club and chess.  They closed by saying Killip is more than an elementary school, it is a community center.

Paul led us in the 4 Way Test, before Jeff adjourned the meeting.

Our next meeting is February 4, when our speakers will share their Rotary Exchange Student Experiences.
