Today's Meeting

President Jeff called the 11th meeting of this Rotary year to order at 12:15.  Karl Eberhard led us in the pledge of allegiance.  Hoppy Hopkins led us in a season appropriate "Jingle Bells".
We were pleased to welcome guests Brittany Baker, wife of our own Jeremy Baker and Mike Penca, Flagstaff Unified School District Superintendent and prospective member.
Eric Walden provided a thought-provoking Rotary minute describing the rise of Rotary from three Chicago businessmen in 1905, to a diverse worldwide organization of over 1.2 million men and women in 34,000 clubs and 180 countries.  In the spirit of our organization Eric challenged us to come up with our own transformative ideas to better our community and the world.
New member Frank Bourget, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Northern Arizona was capably introduced by our own distinguished lawyer, Vaughan Winborne.  See article on our newest member nearby.
Kimberly Batty-Herbert asked for the club’s support in providing for the family the club has adopted for the season through the Salvation Army’s adopt-a-family program.  Our club will provide Christmas gifts for a family of eight.  Four members offered financial support and six offered to assist with shopping and provide financial support.  Contact Kim if you can assist.
Mike Hosking reminded everyone about the Salvation Army bell ringing opportunity on December 15.  We still need volunteers for the 3-4pm and 4-5 pm shifts.  If you can help out please sign up on the website or by clicking here
Brian Kilmoski from the Bellemont office of the National Weather Service was today’s speaker.  Brian has been at this office since 2003.  Brian talked about the October 6, 2010 storm where we experienced a total of 6 tornadoes in the vicinity of Flagstaff and Bellemont.  The Bellemont NWS office is the only NWS office to ever have experienced three F2 tornadoes within two miles of its office within a two-hour time span.
The 2018 weather cycle was pretty close to normal for temperatures and precipitation.  Brian predicts above normal precipitation for this winter season and after a brief warming trend in December, a return to normal temperatures for the rest of winter. As for a white Christmas – possible but no promises.
Jeff presented a children’s book to Brian which will be donated to the Flagstaff Family Food Center library in honor of Brian’s presentation to us today.
Jeremy Baker led us in an enthusiastic rendition of the Rotary Four-Way Test of the things we THINK SAY AND DO and the meeting was adjourned at 1:15.
