Today's Meeting
Doug Nick ADOT Motor Vehicle Divison

Acting President Vaughan Winborne  called the sixth meeting of our Rotary year to order at 12:05 pm.  The pledge of allegiance was led by Karl Eberhard and Hoppy Hopkins led us in The Happy Wanderer in honor of our upcoming hike.

ROTARY MINUTE:  Eric Walden spoke about Interact, which is a Club for high school students to learn about Rotary.  Interact Clubs do 2 service projects a year, one to benefit their school or community, and one with a broader focus.  There are currently no Interact Clubs in Flagstaff, and he would like to see Flagstaff Rotary sponsor a Club to introduce Rotary at a younger age into the Flagstaff community.
INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER:  Jeremy Baker was officially inducted as the newest member of the Flagstaff Rotary.  While born in Mesa, Jeremy never actually lived in Arizona until recently relocating to Flagstaff, as he was born while his parents were moving from California to Colorado!  See full story on Jeremy below.
PROGRAM:  Doug Nick is the Assistant Communications Director for Customer Outreach from the Phoenix MVD.  As it is still summer in the Valley, he was happy to make the drive to Flagstaff for his presentation!  The MVD vision is to get people out of line and safely on the road.  Approximately 2/3 of their services can be done on line, at no additional cost to you.  The amount of time spent in their offices is measured at each location every day.  Since starting programs with a greeter to determine your needs and solving problems before you get to a window, and opening offices at 730, the average wait times have decreased from 52 minutes to 20!
Effective 10/01/2020, the TSA will no longer accept an AZ standard driver license for travel ID.  The new licenses are available now.
The custom license plate program has returned 10.6 million dollars to charitable organizations.  One of the most popular plates is the Route 66 plate, which won a national award for best plate design!

Jeremy Baker led us in the Four Way Test and Acting President Vaughan adjourned the meeting at 1:00 pm.
Our next meeting is October 2, when Jeff Hall will give us an update on the Lowell Observatory.

New Member Inducted into Flagstaff Rotary
Jeremy Baker, Captain
Salvation Army
Jeremy was born in Mesa but never lived in Arizona until moving to Flagstaff earlier this year.  He spent his childhood moving to 8 Western states, graduating from West Torrance High School in Torrance, California in 2005.
Immediately upon graduation from high school, Jeremy joined the Marine Corps and in September 2005, he earned the title of United States Marine.  Jeremy served five years of active duty as an aviation mechanic with the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323. During his active duty he was deployed three times to Afghanistan and Iraq.  During the time of his service, Jeremy travelled to 19 different countries around the world including most countries in Asia and Europe.
Jeremy met his wife Brittany, who is also a Captain in the Salvation Army, during a leadership training for the Salvation Army.  They were married in 2011.  Jeremy and Brittany have one child, a boy named Micah and have second child on the way.
Jeremy and Brittany worked at the Redlands Salvation Army before moving to the Salvation Army College for officer training in Rancho Palos Verde.  After training, Jeremy received his Associate of Arts in Ministry and was commissioned and ordained as an officer in the Salvation Army.  He went on to serve two years in Salem, Oregon, followed by a move to Burbank, Calif., where he and Brittany oversaw Salvation Army programs in and ministries in the area.  While in Burbank, Jeremy joined the Burbank Noon Rotary Club and immediately knew a partnership and friendship with Rotary would continue in every future appointment with the Army.  Jeremy and Brittany moved to Flagstaff in 2018 as the Corps Officers and Salvation Army representatives for Coconino County.
Jeremy is currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program at Nazarene Bible College and will received his BA in May, 2019.  Jeremy’s interests and hobbies include hiking, camping, travel, golf, football, building anything and spending time with his family and playing video games.  He is also interested in anything that has to do with Star Wars!  Use the force Jeremy – and welcome to the Fellowship of Flagstaff Rotary.
