Welcome to another issue of our newsletter! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we covered in this week's meeting and any other scheduled events.
We met both in person and via Zoom. We had guests from Habitat for Humanity.
Club President Tonya Watson called the 8th meeting of the 2021-2022 Rotary year at 12:05pm. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Steve Colf. Tonya led the club in a moment of silence for friends and acquaintances having health issues.
The Rotary Moment was led by Eric Walden on RI's November theme of Rotary Foundation Month. He noted the RI Foundation is the power of people pooling their funds. There has been over US$4 billion dollars of service projects since its inception.
This week's program
Mike Williams introduced Kathy Simmons, Executive Director Northland Hospice & Palliative Care, a Flagstaff 401(c)(3) not for profit hospice that serves the diverse communities of Northern Arizona with compassionate end-of-life care, regardless of ability to pay.
November is National hospice month.
Northland’s philosophy comes from 1400’s regarding holistic hospice care to be a place of shelter and rest for weary or ill travelers on a long journey.
In current context, the philosophy is people should be comfortable at their end of life when medically the prognosis is less than 6 months. Pain management, depression and social services are provided. Actual amount of time on hospice can be longer than six months.
Their programs include (1) hospice care in patients’ residential homes, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes, (2) the Olivia White Hospice Home an assisted living facility, (3) Grief support services, (4) Caregiver training, and (5) the Hodgepodge thrift store.
Northland is classified as deficiency free by the STATE of AZ and Medicare.
Kathy says "shop the Hodgepodge thrift store"!
Tonya closed the program by noting this month's book “Fish Are Not Afraid of Doctors” by J. E. Morris will be donated in Kathy's name to the FFFC Reading Room.
Tonya is looking for historical documents and pictures that will be included in our December 1 Charter Night activities.
Suggestions for speakers can be sent to Mike Williams.
Suggestion for monthly service and social activities can be sent to Millie Alexander.
Download the ClubRunner App for your phone. It will have a list of membership contacts AND a listing of the club events.
Community Service Activities
Tonya has opened up announcements during the meeting for announcements of volunteering activities that we Rotarians are participating in. The announcements made will be repeated here in the newsletter.
Policy “Happy Bucks”: Bring $/check to current or future meetings, or add to your dues payment. These amounts will not be billed. It's the Honor system!
Wrap up Rotary announcements
There were a number of happy bucks comments. Eric W was excited about the MSU Spartans and volunteered $70! Tonya was not quite as excited about her Ga Bulldogs for $5.
Our weekly ‘50-50 split the pot’ card game aka “Hoppe Bucks” total pot is now at $512. Hoppe had Kathy Simmons draw the ticket. Eric Wolverton was the winner. He pulled the 10 of hearts from the deck. So the pot lives on.
Get gussied up! Two men are planning to wear tuxeudo's for the Centennial Night celebration. RSVP to Tonya for the Dec 1 Centennial Charter Night celebration. Cost is $50 per person / $100 per couple.
Send congratulations to Lee Raddatz for his 45 years of Rotary service. His initiation date is 11/30/1976.
