Our Centennial Year!

Welcome to another issue of our newsletter! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we covered in this week's meeting and any other scheduled events.

19 Members, 3 Visiting Rotarians, and 1 Guest joined us in person and via Zoom.  Our visitor was Kathy Simmons from the Northland Hospice here in Flagstaff.  Our visiting Rotarians were DG Bret McKeand, Wendy Nelson AG-North, and Donnis Deever Peoria AZ club

Club President Tonya Watson called the 4th meeting of the 2021-2022 Rotary year at 12:03pm.  The Pledge was led by Laura Trout.  Tonya led the club in a moment of silence.

The Rotary Moment was led by Eric Walden on September’s these of Education and Literacy.  He asked for us to be thoughtful about the following…What were the smells and memories of back to school?  What fond memories do we have of Rotary?  What is our Rotary moment of service?  How can we serve the community?

September is Literacy Month, an opportunity for Rotarians to focus our awareness of literacy and education needs in our own communities and internationally.  Here is a lighthearted essay on Literacy and Reading  https://www.rotary.org/en/there-more-literacy-books

This week's program
Mike Williams introduced Wendy Nelson, Asst District Governor -North who introduced District Governor Bret McKeand.  Bret is a member of the Peoria AZ club.

Bret spoke on “Celebrating our History, Focusing on the Future”.

Serve to Change Lives’ is this year’s Rotary theme.  He noted his Rotary moment was realizing the power and impact of Rotary to improve the lives of individuals.  He was administering Polio vaccines door to door in a small town in Mexico.  He could see the excitement and appreciation of the parents and grandparents of the vaccinated children.  He was able, through Rotary, to provide a positive, permanent impact to those children.  He noted that Rotarians have faith in humanity.  He urged us to seek out our own Rotary moment.

Bret noted Rotary’s role today is to calm trouble waters by living our principles of Ethics, Peacemaking, Leadership, Service, Relationship, Leadership, Responsibility, Diversity , Collaboration, and Communication. He congratulated the club for our continued history of giving to the community and to the Rotary International Foundation.

Bret advised us to continue to support Community Service, to invite the public to Volunteer with us, to go on International Projects, to support the Rotary Foundation, and especially to support Our Youth.

Some special presentation were made:
-PH+3 to Lee Raddutz,
-PH+2 to Millie Alexander,
-District Community Service Award to Millie Alexander and Steve Cevantes,
-Most Valuable Player 2020-2021 to Carla Viola

Tonya closed the program by noting the book “Seeds of Greatness” will be donated in Bret’s name to the reading room of the library of the Flagstaff Family Food Center.
