Our Centennial Year!

Welcome to another issue of our newsletter! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we covered in this week's meeting and any other scheduled events.

We met in person and on zoom.  We had 14 members in house plus 5 on Zoom,  and 4 guests.  Guests included Mark Henderson, who Tonya met while volunteering at the Food Bank last weekend.  Also joining us were the husbands of new inductees Maria ( Eric Montel) and Kathy (Chip Simmons). Also present on Zoom was Lindsey DeStefano, the mural artist.

Club President Tonya Watson called the 12th meeting of the 2021-2022 Rotary year at 12:04pm.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mike Williams.  Tonya led the club in a moment of silent reflection.

The Rotary Moment was led by Eric Walden discussing RI's January theme of Vocational Service Month.  Rotarians benefit by expanding their interpretation of vocation from “just” their profession, to anything they do well.  It could be a hobby or any skill that they can share with others to improve their lives.  This is what Rotarians do – it often doesn’t take a lot of skill – just the commitment to show up.  Thanks for being Rotarians!

CLUB ASSEMBLY!

CENTENNIAL PROJECT

Tonya presented an update on the Mural project.

The final artwork was presented. It is entitled “Volunteerism: A Pathway to Peace”.  The vision statement is “Designed to honor and celebrate, in a lasting way, the tremendous community value of volunteering and peacebuilding.", It will be quite large – 20’ by 31’, or 620 sq. feet!

This project will align with the City of Flagstaff “Alley Activation” initiative to add to the beauty and cultural draw of Flagstaff for many years to come.

Weather permitting the work will be done in a March-April timeframe, and it will be all hands on deck! It is our intention to have a block party to celebrate its completion. Kudos to Tonya and Lindsey for making this happen!

INTERACT CLUB

Largely through the efforts of Eric Walden, the local Interact club has submitted its application to Rotary International to become an officially charted club.  With the guidance of Eric and Kimberly Batty-Herbert, the club has grown from 3, three years ago to a current membership of about 18. Great job!

FLAGSTAFF ROTARY FOUNDATION

Eric reported that the Flagstaff Rotary foundation currently has $108,000 in endowed funds – in an account at the Arizona Community Foundation.  There is currently $2,900 in the checking account, which is unencumbered.  Traditionally, the Foundation supports the Coconino Community College with annual scholarships from the income earned in the endowment account.

Announcements and Other News

Vocational Service

Micah Crabtree shared a bit about himself in the meeting today.  He is a third-generation Rotarian.  His grandfather and father before him also held the position of club president in the Prescott club, as he did a few years ago.  Micah has shared his financial knowledge by teaching classes to seniors in high school about money management, as well as being a guest instructor at N.A.U.  He is co-owner in the local firm of KDI Wealth Management Group, which has a 17-member team, manages assets of $500 million, and has branches throughout Arizona.

Community Service

The Flagstaff Spelling Bee is on February 5th.  We have a long history of providing the first place prize of $250.  We also provide a judge, which will be Micah this year.

Thank you to all of our 8 volunteers at Flagstaff Family Food Center this past Saturday: Millie Alexander, Maria Martell, Paul Wagner & daughter Kate, Karan Patel & girlfriend Carla, and Steve Cervantes and Tonya.
